A founder's honest story
In 2021, our founder Maya Chen was 31, successful by every measure, and quietly exhausted by modern dating. She'd been on every app. She'd been on hundreds of dates. And she kept meeting people who looked great on paper but felt wrong in person — because the apps were optimizing for engagement, not compatibility.
So she did what engineers do: she started asking why. After two years of research, dozens of conversations with relationship psychologists, and a lot of late nights, she built the first version of Spark in her apartment in Austin, Texas.
The idea was radical in its simplicity — slow down, go deeper, match on values and emotional availability rather than photos and proximity. The first 500 users produced 47 long-term couples. Spark was born.
